Ask The Expert: Contributions

Q:
Asked by Al 2/5/13

In 2012 I was employed to Aug 31st.  During that time I contributed $4000 to my TIAA-CREF account.  How much if any can I contribute to a Roth IRA now?  My wife contributed nothing to a retirement account in 2012 but was not employed

Your eligibility to contribute to a Roth IRA is not limited by the fact that you may have contributed to a 401(k) plan at work. So long as you meet the other eligibility requirements for a Roth IRA, you can contribute up to the allowable limits.
